Annual Dinner 2007 Another Success!

What a wonderful evening we had at the Fort Garry Hotel on November 1, 2007! This year Mike McIntyre hosted the evening beautifully. Mike is the justice reporter for the Winnipeg Free Press, an award-winning journalist, national radio host and best-selling author to name just a few of his accomplishments. To learn more about Mike click here for his bio. We were so pleased to have Mike be a part of our dinner this year and appreciate all the time and effort he put into the evening.

Our good friend and host of last year's dinner Janet Stewart, the new host of CBC News at Six, also attended and gave a poignant speech on her views of domestic abuse and how organizations like Alpha House are helping to get the message out. Janet has been very committed to the efforts of Alpha House and is an excellent ambassador for us, her presence and participation at the dinner helped make it the special evening it was.

Once again a previous resident of Alpha House spoke from the heart about her experiences and how Alpha House helped her to leave an abusive relationship and start over again successfully. Her courage and perseverance was an inspiration to us all and her words reminded us of how important Alpha House is to help women leaving abuse regain their self esteem and heal from the trauma they have experienced.

For the first year ever we auctioned off the 'Pots of Empowerment'. The women and children of Alpha House volunteer their time and talents to paint flower pots depicting their experiences. These pots truly are works of art. Each pot came with a postcard explaining the inspiration behind the creation. The auction was a team effort by Mike McIntyre and Janet Stewart. Janet read the stories for each pot while Mike got the bids flowing. It was a huge success and a great way to raise additional revenue in support of Alpha House.

We also nearly doubled the money raised on our envelope fundraiser. We sold individual envelopes with a chance to win one of eighteen baskets each valued at $100.00 or more! We sure had a lot of fun opening envelopes and the baskets were spectacular.

Award-winning journalist, national radio show host, best-selling author, webmaster, pundit, movie consultant and cruise director…Mike McIntyre loves to keep busy! McIntyre, 32, is the justice reporter for the Winnipeg Free Press where he has worked since 1997.

He operates his own website, www.mikeoncrime.com, which is updated several times a day and features the latest in local, national and international crime and justice news along with daily jury polls, a discussion forum and breaking news mailing list.
Since February 2003, McIntyre has produced and hosted the popular weekly talk radio show “Crime and Punishment”.
In March 2006, the show was picked up by the Corus Radio Network and launched in 12 cities across Canada, including Vancouver, Victoria, Kelowna, Edmonton, Calgary, Saskatoon, Regina, Winnipeg, London, Hamilton, Toronto and Montreal.
McIntyre also makes regular appearances with Charles Adler on his national Corus talk radio show and is also called upon frequently by talk show hosts across the country for his insight into crime and justice news and issues.

McIntyre is the author of three Canadian true crime books:
“Nowhere To Run: The Killing of Const. Dennis Strongquill” was published in 2003 by Great Plains Publications and chronicled the tragic murder of a Manitoba RCMP officer. The book is in its third printing and was a national bestseller within 15 days. Film rights have been sold to a Calgary production company, Alberta Filmworks, and a feature movie is in development.
McIntyre’s second book, “The Yuletide Bandit: A Seven-Year Search For A Serial Criminal”, was published by Great Plains in 2004 and chronicles one man’s daring crime spree, the desperate police search to catch him and the dramatic conclusion inside a Winnipeg massage parlour. Feature film rights have been sold to a Winnipeg production company.
McIntyre’s third book – “To The Grave: Inside A Spectacular RCMP Sting”, was launched in November 2006 and is already a national bestseller in its third printing! To The Grave chronicles the mysterious disappearance of Brandon teenager Erin Chorney and the incredible RCMP operation which uncovered the shocking truth.

McIntyre is a firm believer in giving everyone a say, and regularly interviews people from all facets of the justice system – judges, lawyers, police officers, victims and yes, even the criminals. The result is often candid, eye-opening discussions which result in a variety of emotions and stir debate.

Born and bred in Winnipeg, McIntyre graduated from River East Collegiate and completed his journalistic studies in the Creative Communications program at Red River College. He is married to Chassity, and together they are the parents of Parker, 6, and Isabella, 2.

The couple began hosting their annual Carribean Cruise in January 2006 and are looking forward to their third tropical adventure in January 2008.
